We’ve got the bug for a city break. After a great time in Italy, city hopping this summer we decided that half term was the perfect time to try another city seeing as work meant we only had 3 days clear. I had visited Berlin around 6 years ago for my best friends hen night and we had an amazing time, but Berlin has a reputation for being family friendly so we thought it was perfect.
WE STAYED
Soho House Berlin - Torstraße 1, 10119 Berlin
We booked ourselves into Soho House Berlin and launched ourselves into the German capital. The house is stunning with a pool on the roof (which even in the freezing cold we decided to use, just to say we had), a gym (Jason used this, I didn’t) and a huge sauna and steam room…. press here to read my blog on that ‘experience’
WE DID
River Tour - Historic City Cruise - Am Weidendamm, 10117 Berlin
Top of the list for us was a tour, doesn’t matter which country we are in we find the ideal way to get your bearings is to find a bus tour, in Berlin we got the double whammy of being able to take a river boat tour too. The architecture in Germany is pretty incredible. Like the UK there is a real mix of the new and the old and the tour takes you through each era.
WE ATE
Currywurst @Curry 61 - Oranienburg Str. 6, 10178 Berlin
Currywurst is real German dish and the best is from Curry 61. Its basically chopped up hotdog covered in curry sauce and ketchup. I mean the nutritional value isn’t going to be high, but the taste levels certainly are. Best served with a cold glass of beer and a wooden fork .
Schnitzelie - Chausseestraße 8, 10115 Berlin
If you’re looking for schnitzel, look no further. Chicken or veal coated in golden breadcrumbs, served with beautiful pickled cucumber and potatoes, the schnitzel is to die for. Its a great place to go for dinner with kids thats not a ‘kiddie atmosphere’, even the pickiest of eaters will love the food here. Its got a real vibe about it too so lots of atmosphere while you eat.
Paul Mohring - Oranienburger Str.84, 10178 Berlin
Whilst out walking we went to a great little coffee and ice cream place, the ice cream menu isn’t huge but it doesn’t need to be. The ice cream is made on site and the girls adored the Chai latte flavour. I got a buttered rum to walk around with, I can’t even describe it, other than to say that it was the perfect cold weather warmer.
Seaside - Mohrenstraße 17, 10117 Berlin
Lunch was at Seaside a fish and seafood restaurant just off the main shopping street of Friedrichstrasse. A funky little restaurant with the choice of fish on the menu in a glass cabinet at the till point. Choose which fish you would like and how you would like it serving and then tuck in. Gorgeous.
Bird - Am Falkplatz, 510437, Berlin
The best burgers EVER. My advice would be to order one between two people, the portions are absolutely massive. Great beers too. This is right next to Mauerpark and very close to the Graffiti wall so you can take a stroll back to the Mitte district taking in the sights along the way. It’s the original ‘Berlin Wall’ and stunning to see .
The Flying Monkey, Kastanienallee 15, 10435, Berlin
We came across this restaurant as we were walking down Oderberger Strasse, which is a really cool street with lots of boutique shops. The Flying Monkey is a dim sum restaurant and we stuffed ourselves silly here. Fab atomshere and no problem for out kids to be there. Salt and pepper squid, Char sir bao and crunch noodles with beef are high on our recommendation list, but to be honest there wasn’t one bad dish. It was the perfect meal to end our fab family holiday.
